The HZI, Germany's largest non-university infection research centre, is a member of the Helmholtz Association and conducts cutting-edge research in the field of infectious diseases. Our scientists develop novel methods and strategies to combat infectious diseases faster and more effectively. Our common goal is to find new approaches to prevention, diagnosis and therapy of infectious diseases. Bacterial and viral pathogens, their interaction with the human immune system and new effective agents and vaccines are the focus of our research.
Our department (BIFO) develops software and algorithms to study the evolution and epidemiology of influenza viruses based on genomic, geographical and phenotypic data sets. We collaborate locally, nationally and internationally with biologists and medical doctors from universities and research institutions and operate the bioinformatics platform of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF).
