The Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH) Greifswald is a branch of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI). Here, we research the connections between the health of humans, animals and their environment. Our goal is to better understand zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance and the evolution of pathogens, thus contributing to the prevention of pandemics. Founded in 2021, the institute, with its international and interdisciplinary teams in a total of five research groups, is a beacon for innovative One Health research in one of the most beautiful regions of Germany, directly on the Baltic Sea.
The Department of Epidemiology and Ecology of Antimicrobial Resistance (GEAR), headed by Prof. Katharina Schaufler, investigates the spread and adaptation of antibiotic-resistant pathogens (ARPs) in a One Health context. It combines state-of-the-art bioinformatic approaches at the genome and transcriptome level with phenotypic characterisation and molecular biological methods to characterise ARE in detail and to advance the establishment of comprehensive and novel surveillance and therapy strategies.
We offer a position in well-equipped laboratories and as part of a motivated team looking for applicants interested in studying the occurrence and spread of ARE in a One-Health context, bacterial fitness costs, bacterial pathogenesis, gene and stress regulation, bacterial growth behaviour and competitiveness, and evolution and adaptation to different environments.
Tasks
- Organising the day-to-day running of the laboratory, including ordering, inventory, maintaining the culture medium and dishwashing areas and stock control
- Management of reagents, sample material and collections, and the bacterial strain collection
- Conducting microbiological and molecular biological experiments as part of the working group's projects
- Training and instruction of members of the working group and external scientists from Africa or Asia in laboratory analysis procedures and the handling of laboratory equipment
Prerequisites
- Successful relevant qualification as a technical assistant (BTA, CTA) or equivalent skills and experience or qualification with comparable knowledge and experience
- At least one year of practical laboratory experience in biosafety level 2 facilities and in handling ARE
- In-depth knowledge of handling chemicals, antibiotics and solvents is required
- Experience in organising a laboratory independently and practical skills in culturing bacteria from a wide range of biological samples (e.g. stool, food and water samples), nucleic acid extraction, in vitro and in vivo phenotyping of ARE are explicitly desired.
- In addition to good work organisation, the ability to work independently, knowledge of Microsoft Office and the ability to work in a team, a high degree of motivation, flexibility and resilience are also expected for the position.
- Good knowledge of written and spoken English (the laboratory work is carried out in an international team)
