The HIPS was founded in 2009 as a site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in collaboration with Saarland University and is the first publicly funded non-university research institution in Germany explicitly dedicated to pharmaceutical research. The focus of the HIPS is on the discovery and development of new active agents against infectious diseases.
The departments of the HIPS work closely with Saarland University and the local pharmaceutical industry, as well as with national and international research institutions and companies. Since 2009, the HIPS has grown continuously to over 220 employees in 2023 and is currently being expanded in terms of space and topics with funds from the state and federal government. The core research areas of the HIPS will be strengthened and expanded by adding state-of-the-art bioinformatics and microbiota research to the institute's portfolio. To accommodate the growing number of researchers at the HIPS, new laboratory and office space will be created in the coming years.
The Microbial Natural Products department is working on the characterisation of new natural products from microbial producers, in particular from myxobacteria. Extensive microbiological and biotechnological approaches are combined with modern analytical methods and bioassays to identify and isolate new active ingredients and to elucidate their structure and mechanism of action.
Tasks
They support the department's scientific research in the fields of microbiology and chemical analysis and contribute to optimising the production of natural products using biotechnological methods. Together with the MINS department's team of technicians, they also take on tasks related to equipment support and laboratory operations, as well as conducting complex experiments.
Prerequisites
You have completed vocational training as a CTA/BTA or chemical/biological laboratory technician and should be interested in biotechnological issues in the field of active ingredient research. Proficiency in a range of methods in the fields of microbiology and chemical analysis (sample preparation, chromatographic techniques) is expected. You will have relevant experience in the cultivation of microorganisms and the processing of fermentations, as well as a willingness to familiarise yourself with new systems and methods. Experience with the safety regulations of BSL1/BSL2 laboratories is also required. In addition, you should have a good technical understanding and be interested in independently solving analytical and technical problems. Basic English communication skills and confidence in using standard computer software are required.
The following would be an advantage for this position
- Knowledge of microbiological and biotechnological methods for the production of microbial natural products
- Experience with chemical-analytical methods such as column chromatography and HPLC
