The animal research unit at the HZI is looking for an animal caretaker.

The Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, based in Braunschweig, is a member of the Helmholtz Association and conducts cutting-edge research in the field of infectious diseases. Our scientists develop novel methods and strategies to combat infectious diseases ever more quickly and effectively. Our common goal is to find new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. Our research focuses on bacterial and viral pathogens, their interaction with the human immune system and the development of new active agents and vaccines.


The Comparative Medicine Department is a state-of-the-art animal facility whose main task is the breeding and keeping of laboratory mice as well as providing services in the field of laboratory animal science for HZI scientists. The Mouse Pathology Platform advises on the implementation of projects involving histopathological issues, produces histological sections and stains, establishes new stains and offers the evaluation and interpretation of these samples in close cooperation with scientists. The Animal Welfare Department advises scientists on how to conduct experiments in a manner that is appropriate for the protection of animals.

Tasks

Taking on all animal care tasks:

  • basic care (feeding, watering, moving, cleaning and disinfecting, supplying and disposing of items for keeping animals)
  • breeding support (breeding, mating, computerised record keeping and labelling)
  • taking on demanding additional tasks (assistance with experiments, sample collection and substance application)
Prerequisites
  • Successfully completed training as an animal caretaker specialising in research and clinics or comparable training with equivalent skills and experience
  • Good animal care skills
  • Professional experience in the care of genetically modified mouse lines under barrier conditions as well as experience in handling IVC systems
  • Routine performance of applications and biopsies
  • Knowledge of animal protection and genetics laws
  • Committed, reliable and well-organised way of working
  • Good communication and team skills and a constant willingness to provide our scientific users with the best possible service
  • Basic IT and English skills are required
  • Willingness to work weekends and on public holidays
Working hours

19,5 hours per week
