The award-winner of the 2015 Hansen Family Award has been named: the Board of Trustees of the Bayer Science & Education Foundation and the Scientific Committee for this award have presented Professor Emmanuelle Charpentier with the EUR 75,000 prize, one of Germany’s most prestigious scientific accolades. The award is in recognition for her groundbreaking discoveries in the field of genome editing. Alexander von Humboldt Prof. Charpentier is head of the Regulation in Infection Biology Department at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, and Hannover Medical School in Germany. She is also Guest Professor at the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) at Umeå University.
Her research work resulted in development of the CRISPR-Cas9 technology, a type of molecular scissor comprising a duplex of two RNAs and a protein. The mechanism can be used as a powerful technology for gene editing. Viewed as a revolution in biology, it already is used in a wide variety of applications in laboratories worldwide. The award will be officially presented by Bayer CEO Dr. Marijn Dekkers at a ceremony in Berlin on June 15, 2015.
