The HIOH was founded in 2021 as a site of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research GmbH (HZI) and works closely with its local founding partners, the University of Greifswald, Greifswald University Medicine and the Friedrich Loeffler Institute Greifswald Riems. The new institute building will include state-of-the-art laboratories - up to biosafety level 3 - and will also set ecological standards by using recyclable building materials and greening the façade and roofs.
Construction site installation is planned for mid-July 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new building will take place on September 12, and the building is expected to open in summer 2027. The construction costs amount to around 38 million euros. The state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will bear around two thirds of this, with the federal government contributing one third.
