The basis for the annual evaluation of scientific citations is the database "Web of Science Core Collection", which lists scientific articles from around 21,100 scientific journals. For this year's evaluation, Clarivate Analytics considered the period from 2008 to 2018. Frequently cited publications are those, which, in their year of publication, belong to one percent of the most frequently cited in their field. Only those scientists who are involved in several such Highly Cited Papers are admitted to the exclusive circle of Highly Cited Researchers. In 2019, these are approximately 6,200 personalities worldwide.
