Medicine Maker honours HIPS researcher

British professional magazine "The Medicine Maker" includes Claus-Michael Lehr in the top hundred most influential experts in drug development in 2018 again

Lehr is the head of the "Drug Delivery" department at the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS). His research focuses on the tailor-made transport of medications through the biological barriers of the body to their site of action. The "Top 100" list is available for downloading here: https://themedicinemaker.com/power-list/2018/

Biological barriers serve a number of very different functions: Not only do they provide a bulwark against the ingress of pathogens and other harmful particles, but they also serve beneficial substances, such as drugs, as "gateways" into the body. "Skin, lung and gastrointestinal tract are the barriers across which medications need to be transported to get to the proper location for their effect," Prof Claus-Michael Lehr explains.

The department head at the HIPS in Saarbrücken, a joint facility of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig and the Saarland University, and his research team developed effective drug carrier systems: Nano-particles that serve as stable packaging for drugs and as "piggyback" carriers through these biological barriers.

This year marks the fourth time the magazine "The Medicine Maker" assembled its "Top 100" list. Votes submitted by the readers and an assessment by a professional jury contributed to the ranking. The magazine reports on topics ranging from the development of new agents to the market launch of medications.
