Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil visited the study centre of the National Cohort (NAKO) in Hannover on Thursday, 25 June 2015. NAKO is Germany's largest health study and includes 18 sites nation-wide. In the upcoming years, a total of 200,000 randomly selected people will be subjected to a medical examination and an interview concerning their lifestyle habits. The Hannover centre will account for 10,000 subjects. The head of government of Lower Saxony paid a visit to learn first-hand about the work of this study centre that has been established by the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in the recently opened Clinical Research Center (CRC) at the Medical Park Hannover, and joined the Scientific Director of the HZI, Prof Dirk Heinz, on a tour of the premises of the study centre. To get an in-depth view of what is involved in the study, Stephan Weil also underwent part of the medical examination programme of the NAKO.
