Perspectives for the Medicine of the Future

Berlin: "Helmholtz Health Summit" on October 8

What opportunities lie ahead for the future of medical research and healthcare systems? Researchers from the Helmholtz Association exchange ideas with decision-makers from science, politics, patient organizations, biotech, and the pharmaceutical industry at the Helmholtz Health Summit. The conference focuses on scientific developments that will have a long-term impact on medicine and healthcare. Topics include digital health, artificial intelligence, personalized therapy, prevention, pandemic resilience, and research transfer.

What are the molecular causes of diseases? How can AI and data science help us understand them at the cellular level? And how can future pandemics be prevented or mitigated? These are the questions scientists in the Helmholtz Health research field are tackling. At the inaugural Helmholtz Health Summit in Berlin, they are collaborating with decision-makers from various sectors to shape visions and strategies for the successful transformation of medicine.

“Few organizations have the opportunity, as we do, to significantly advance AI-driven medicine. Helmholtz not only brings together outstanding talents from medical research and the AI field as well as profound expertise in interdisciplinary biomedical research, but also provides a unique computing infrastructure,” says Prof. Otmar Wiestler, President of the Helmholtz Association.

Here are some program highlights:

  • Keynote by Sarah Teichmann, University of Cambridge: Mapping the Human Body One Cell at a Time
  • Fabian Leendertz: One Health Approaches for Better Prevention
  • Ali Ertürk: AI-Driven Decoding of Disease Perturbations at the Cellular Level in 3D
  • Ilais Moreno Velásquez: German National Cohorte (NAKO) – What Keeps Men and Women Healthy?

“Helmholtz Health is Europe’s largest medical research organization. We are committed to discovering breakthrough solutions for a healthier future. Cutting-edge AI tools integrated across the entire organization accelerate the delivery of societal benefits". Prof. Matthias Tschöp, CEO Helmholtz Munich, who currently represents the interests of Helmholtz Health as Helmholtz Vice President.

Next year, this role will be taken over by Prof. Maike Sander, Scientific Director and Chair of the Board of the Max Delbrück Center. “Advancements in technology and AI-driven innovations will transform medicine through precision prevention. Helmholtz Health is poised to be the driving force behind this transformation,” she says. “At the Helmholtz Health summit in Berlin, we will explore how to harness these technological advances to prioritize individual well-being in an aging society for healthier, longer lives.”

An alliance for medical research

The event is organized by “Helmholtz Health”, an alliance that pools the expertise of more than 9,000 researchers and other staff from six centers of the Helmholtz Association:

  • German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ)
  • Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen (DZNE)
  • Helmholtz Munich
  • Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR)
  • Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI)
  • Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (Max Delbrück Center)
