The Zayed Sustainability Prize promotes small and medium-sized enterprises as well as nonprofit organizations and schools for sustainable achievements in the categories of health, nutrition, energy, water and secondary schools. The SORMAS open-source digital platform for early detection of disease outbreaks and epidemic control management impressed the international jury of the prestigious sustainability award, which is presented by the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
SORMAS is now in use in eleven countries from five different WHO regions for a variety of diseases. Only recently, the HZI had spun off the non-profit SORMAS Foundation, which maintains the open source software SORMAS and supports health authorities worldwide in the implementation of SORMAS and other open source tools.
“We are very pleased that SORMAS is one of the three finalists among so many competitors and are looking forward to the announcement of the winner in January,” says Prof Dirk Heinz, Scientific Director of the HZI. “This will give the newly established SORMAS Foundation an additional boost.”
Prof Gérard Krause, Head of Department “Epidemiology” at HZI, under whose leadership SORMAS was developed, adds: “It is a nice recognition especially for our partners in Germany and abroad and motivates us all very much to further develop SORMAS.”
The finalists from all categories can be found on the Zayed Sustainability Prize website.
