Jörg Vogel, founding director of the Helmholtz Institute for RNA-based Infection Research (HIRI) and director of the Institute for Molecular Infection Biology (IMIB) at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU), is one of the most frequently cited researchers in his field. This is the result of an analysis published on 19 November 2019 by Clarivate Analytics, a company specializing in citation data. Vogel is investigating regulatory RNA molecules in bacterial pathogens such as salmonella and in the human microbiome. His research group is developing new methods based on high-throughput sequencing to identify RNA molecules and understand their mechanism of action in health and disease. Vogel has headed the HIRI, a branch of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig in cooperation with the JMU since 2017.
