HZI Campus
At our main site in Braunschweig, we conduct basic research focussing on three topics: "Bacterial and viral pathogens", "Immune response and immune intervention" and "Anti-infectives". How do bacteria and viruses make us ill? How does the immune system fight these pathogens? And which substances can protect us from infections in the future? Scientists at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig are working on these questions.
The majority of the more than 900 employees in Braunschweig are scientists, but the management, administration and staff offices are also part of the main campus of the HZI.
On the 96,000 square metre campus in Braunschweig-Stöckheim, 20 buildings house a total of 7,000 square metres of laboratory space. The extensive infrastructural facilities on site also include our technology platforms.
In addition to our own laboratories, the Leibniz Institute German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (DSMZ) and the pharmaceutical biotechnology laboratories of the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM) are also located on the campus. Another guest on our premises is the BioS biotechnology school laboratory.
